Dubai Mangroves is set to be the world’s largest restoration project. It will span over 72 km (around 45 miles) and is expected to sequester around 1.23 million tonnes of CO2 per year. Each tree will absorb approximately 12.3 kg (27 lb) of CO2 annually.
Local landscape design and architecture company creating sustainable cities – Urb – has put forward the plan.
They want to plant over 100 million mangrove trees along Dubai’s shores, representing the world’s largest coastal regeneration project.
The project will include a Mangrove Visitor Hub, Botanical Museum and Nature Reserve Conservation Centre.
The activities will include guided nature walks, educational programs, and conservation activities.

Drones would precisely place the mangrove seeds in locations where they have the best chance of survival.
Six areas are currently being considered for pilot studies that would inform the final plan for the project: Jebel Ali Beach, Dubai Marina Beach, Jumeirah Public Beach, Umm Suqeim Beach, Mercato Beach and Dubai Islands Beach.

This news comes as Sheikh Hamdan launched the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033. It features 200 projects, initiatives and plans. Overall it covers ten key pillars that are essential to wellbeing.
One of the key objectives is a 300% increase in the length of beach cycling tracks across Dubai. More than 115 km of pedestrian and cycling tracks will be constructed, alongside planting of over 3,000 trees.
Also, the plan includes a 60% extension of night swimming beaches and new beach areas specifically for women.
